Whole School Literacy

No Pens Day
On Wednesday 7th December, the students at Woodlands Academy in Coventry took part in No Pens Day Wednesday; a national speaking and listening event to encourage schools to put down their pens and pick up their language.
By taking part in No Pens Day Wednesday, the staff at Woodlands Academy have successfully created a unique opportunity for students to share their ideas and learn through talk as all lessons focused on speaking and listening rather than writing.
Mrs Denise Barker, Literacy Co-ordinator at Woodlands Academy said: “We were delighted to take part in No Pens Day Wednesday in support of ‘learning through talk’. Reading and writing are very important skills but people are often not aware of the vital importance of speaking and listening skills.
They underpin everything. Not only have the students loved it, teachers and parents have also benefited as well.”
Students took part in English lessons using playdoh to mould the item their partner was describing, a wider key skills lesson making origami cubes and a science lesson making The Möbius strip and an English lesson where the students had to cut up words and separate them into word class - verb, adverb or adjective.  There were lessons in debating skills, spelling games and collage making.  All lessons centered around speaking, listening and following instructions without the teacher or student using a pen!

Woodlands Academy - where literacy is a priority

Every aspect of a child’s work in school is influenced by his / her ability to use language imaginatively and accurately.  At Woodlands, we are committed to a consistent whole-school emphasis on all literacy skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening

We believe that improved literacy should be incorporated into all lessons across the curriculum, and that the literacy standards of all pupils can be raised not just by what happens in formal lessons at school but also by the involvement of parents and carers at home.
Please check the linked pages for guidance on how you can help shape a child’s academic success and personal development by supporting the development of key literacy competencies.
