Sports at Woodlands Academy

The direction of sport…
Over the past fifty years, Woodlands has strived to achieve high standards across all areas. The school has a proud tradition in sport and still believes in promoting a positive sporting ethos and producing high quality successful sportsmen. The school can now boast some of the best facilities in the city.

We have reached a new stage in the school’s development so let me introduce myself and my ambitions as the Director of Specialism at Woodlands Academy.

I am Mr Young, an ex-student of the school, and I have been teaching Physical Education here for four years. I would firstly like to say that I intend to keep the tradition and importance of sport high on my agenda. This means raising the profile of all of our teams and sporting successes. Secondly, and just as important if not more so, I will strive to make the ethos and values that sport provides become fully embedded in all students and in all subject areas across the curriculum.
At Woodlands Academy, we need to engage our students to achieve to the best of their ability in all areas of school life. By using the ethos of sport - for example, with such values as teamwork, leadership, competition, fair play and commitment - we can significantly help to improve the students’ attainment levels.

Finally, I would like to say that although we encourage all students to take part in sports and fitness, and are exceptional at sport, the school has a lot more to offer. As mentioned above the values and ethos of sport breed success in all areas of the school’s curriculum. My aim, as is that of The Head and the Leadership Team of the school, is for us to be an outstanding school in all areas, including sport.

Mr B Young, Director of Specialism

Extra-Curricular Activities

The school provides a comprehensive range of Inter-House competitive opportunities in each year group, based around the curriculum offer and extra- curriculum offer. Student participation in the Inter-House programme is an expectation of the student population. Inter-house is a key feature of the ethos of a Woodlands student.

The school also provides inter-school competition for a number of the above sports. The representatives sport squads are selective but every student is invited to trial for selection.
